ANNUAL CONNEMARA PONY SHOW GRÜNBERG 2020
Due to Covid 19 we had to change the date of our show from June to September and were more than happy the show could take place on the lovely grounds of Grünberg Riding club the weekend 19/20.09.2020.
On Saturday we had ridden classes and best dressage pony of the day was the stallion Kinzighausen Hazy Majesto by Frederiksminde Hazy Marvel, best jumping pony Kinzighausen Golden Montelino by Glaskopf Golden Merlin.
We had nearly 80 entries for the in-hand classes, and it was really lovely to see high quality ponies in all classes.
Junior Champioship went to Maila, a two-year-old filly by AC Samson of Engvang, Reserve to Hohnhorst Marla by Egelunds Cover Boy.
Best in show was Castle Emperor by Castle Comet, 11-year-old buckskin stallion recently imported from Great Britain by Sternberg stud, Alexandra Krämer, bred by Peter O’Toole, Ireland.
Champion mare and Reserve Best in show was Kinzighausen Hazy Joyce by Frederiksminde Hazy Marvel, bred by Kinzighausen stud and owned by Chris Wegener-Schmidt.

Pat Lyne Remembered
The Connemara pony and its kinsfolk have lost a true friend with the sad news that Pat Lyne has passed away, aged 91 years. Although living in the United Kingdom, Pat had a very close association with the people of Connemara and their ponies for over forty years, and her immeasurable amount of knowledge gleaned was demonstrated in the many books she wrote rolling back the mists of time and place, taking readers down many a boreen to meet famous ponies and breeders, discuss diverse pedigree lines and share recollections unearthed from her diaries, notebooks, photographs and memories. Imparting her great wealth of knowledge through her writings on the pony and with a keen eye for the wider view, often providing a narrative for the social history of Connemara, Pat introduced many to the fascination of this remote and stunningly beautiful region and imparted her lifelong passion for this most remarkable of ponies.
Pat’s love for the Connemara pony was second to none. Her breeding prefix Chiltern provided her with many a proud moment in the showing field, Chiltern Thunderburst being particularly close to her heart. After an initial uphill struggle on export to Germany as a yearling colt in 1990 and being a late developer, he achieved Stallion Champion at the Northern German Connemara Show in 1995 under Irish judges, and went on to prove himself across country, showjumping and in ‘character handling’. C. Thunderburst was a son of Thunderbolt, a former Clifden winner and of Mountain Lad breeding, who caught Pat’s imagination when he was rescued from the jaws of a meat factory, aged 21, and brought to England to hold court for the last eleven years of his life. Chiltern Cameo, one of Pat’s favourite mares, was Thunderburst’s dam. Recognised as a respected international judge, Pat travelled extensively overseas visiting no less than eight of the countries with affiliated daughter CPBS societies.
We owe a great debt to Pat, who together with local business man John Sweeney, set up the Station House Museum in the old engine house of the former Clifden Station. The museum, now part of the Station House complex, lays emphasis on local historical connections with pioneering feats of the past century and on the history of the Connemara pony, complete with many pieces of beloved memorabilia and her books, which by their unique narrative gave the pony a special place in many a heart worldwide. Pat’s eternal interest in the museum, manning it whenever she visited Clifden, made it a sure port of call for all visitors who were interested in the Connemara pony, where they would be guaranteed a warm welcome and a story or two.
Thank you Pat, you have lived a very full and passionate life, and left a legacy for which all lovers of the Connemara pony are truly appreciative. May you rest in peace, gazing upon sweet meadows, the sound of surf in the distance and with a gentle nuzzle from your beloved Arctic Moon.
We are saddened to hear that esteemed member of the Connemara Pony Breeders’ Society of Australia (CPBSA) John Tennant passed away peacefully on Thursday 31st December 2020, aged 89 years.
John was a Committee member and President of the Society for many years. He was the Society’s delegate to the International Committee of Connemara Pony Societies (ICCPS) where he also served a term as President. He was awarded the Michael J O’Malley Award in 2015. The award is given to recognise an international Connemara owner, or breeder, who has selflessly promoted the Connemara Pony during their lifetime. John was recognised by the ICCPS as an Emeritus member.
John bred ponies under the stud name of Rupari, a name still recognised through the Society’s stud book.
John was married to Pat who predeceased John and left an enormous gap in John’s life which he never got over.
John will be sadly missed by his friends in the Society who knew him as someone who gave his all to the good of the Society and was a significant person in advancing the aims and objectives of the Society.
He will be missed by Vicki and I as a mentor and support over our 30 years involvement with the Society.
I will miss the many nights of conversation and reminiscences over several Connemara Irish whiskeys.
Rest in Peace, John Tennant
I am sure everyone will agree that Covid 19 has made 2020 a year like no other. It is usual to start this report by describing all the Society events that have taken place during the year. Sadly, this year almost all of them have, one by one, been cancelled.
The first event to be cancelled was the Colt Inspection which was due to take place at Moreton Morell on 15th April. This was of course when we were all locked down’ so it was rearranged for 2nd September, again at Moreton Morell. We were very fortunate as things had eased and we were able to go ahead. Ten colts were forward and the following ponies were graded Class One.
Wellbury Play The Joker’ (Spinway Token/ Cloonisle Colleen)
Clover Hill Magic’ (Glencarrig Knight/ Inverin Misty)
Skaergaardens Disco Night’ (Wirtsmuhle Delaney’s/ Skaergaardens Secret Love)
Rosscon Emperor’ (Frederiksminde Hazy March/ Everlast Worth the Wait)
In early May it was with heavy hearts that the Council decided to cancel both the Breed Show and the Northern Show and the Eventing Championship followed soon after this.
During the summer, our members were given something to do when Horse Events ran four well supported Virtual Shows for us, with In hand and Ridden Classes culminating in a Championship Show
Virtual In Hand Champion -Tesresmos Sunny Bear – Owned and bred by Jane Somerset.
Virtual Ridden Champion – Eastlands Tushie Brae
Bred by Mr & Mrs JG Staveley and owned by Emma Jane Murray
For the first time, the Performance Day was held in a new format with three Performance Days “piggy backing” on 3 One Day Events held on 3rd and 4th In spite of some bad weather, these days were well supported and enjoyed by competitors.

The Council have been busy in spite of the cancelled show and other events. The previous Council started the process of updating the Society’s Articles and Rules in October 2019 so as to update them and make them compliant with the Companies Act 2006 and it was for this Council to complete the task.
One very good thing to come out of the pandemic has been that the Society has now embraced “teleconferencing” with all the Council and Sub-Committee meetings taking place on Zoom. Whilst it will never replace being able to sit around a table, Zoom has saved many hours of driving and the cost of venues.
There have not been many causes for celebration this year, but one of them was being able to celebrate Blanche Miller being given the prestigious Michael J O’Malley Award by the International Committee of Connemara Pony Societies. and to congratulate her on this achievement.

Filly Inspections were held in the autumn, organised by the regions and 60 fillies were inspected which is only 25% less than previous years. At the time of writing, applications to register pure and part bred foals are still coming in and so far, only one HWSD test has come back positive. This was for an adult pony imported into the jurisdiction of the BCPS in utero.
Unsurprisingly, the membership has decreased slightly but the increase in passport income from the over stamping of Irish passports has helped to compensate for this. It is now a legal requirement for all equines resident in the UK for more than 30 days to be registered with a British Passport Issuing Authority and in the case of Connemara ponies this is the BCPS.
Meanwhile, interest in the Connemara pony remains high and sales have been very brisk with good prices being sought and obtained. As has been the case in recent years, ponies bred for performance are commanding the highest prices. It is important that this Society which is first and foremost a “Breed” Society continues to preserve and cherish the native characteristics and that elusive quality “type” which makes the Connemara Pony the wonderful breed that so many people admire.
